WepresentresultsofanobservationoftheanomalousX-raypulsar4U 0142+61withtheEPICcamerason XMM-Newton performedon2003January24.Thepulsephaseaveragedspectrumcanbebestdescribedbythesumofablackbodywithatemperatureof kT _ { \text { BB } } = 0.395 ( 5 ) \text { keV } andapowerlawwithphotonindex \Gamma = 3.62 ( 5 ) .Theunabsorbed2–10 keVfluxis \sim 7.2 \cdot 10 ^ { -11 } \text { erg } \text { s } ^ { -1 } \text { cm } ^ { -2 } .Noevidenceforadditionalspectralfeaturessuchascyclotronlinesispresent.Theseresultsareconsistentwiththosefromanearlier Chandra observationin2001May.Phaseresolvedspectroscopyoverthe 8.6882 ( 2 ) speriod ( MJD52663.93 ) showsclearvariationswithpulsephaseof \Gamma , while kT _ { \text { BB } } showsasmallvariationof \sim 12 \% .Weconfirmearlierconclusionsby thattheemissionfromAXPsismorelikelytooriginatefromneutronstarswithonesingleandmagneticallyactiveregionontheneutronstar.Thesignificantlydifferentbehaviorofthesoftandhardspectralcomponentswithpulsephase , however , cannotbefullyreconciledwiththepresentmagnetaremissionmodels .
